Anyone familiar with Dusseldorf’s Rheinturm will also know its distinctive light display. What many do not realize, however, is that it is actually a decimal clock. Hours, minutes and seconds are not shown in the conventional way, but are encoded by illuminated segments. For many people, it remains a mystery – until they understand the principle behind it.
This very principle is taken up by our apprentices training as electronics technicians for devices and systems in a dedicated training project. Their task is to implement a decimal clock modeled on the Rheinturm as a fully functional circuit – from circuit development and layout design through to commissioning. A special feature of the project is that it is implemented entirely without a processor.

Learning, understanding and applying electronics
The project is a fixed part of the second year of training and is deliberately designed with a strong practical focus. From the initial idea through the development of the electronics to the layout and commissioning, the apprentices create an independent system that makes technical interrelationships tangible. The knowledge required for this is taught in advance in a targeted way – including content that goes beyond the traditional curriculum.

For us, this means young professionals who think in a structured way, work in a solution-oriented manner, and understand real-world requirements.
